:: History ::
:: Introduction

The Drop Redoubt is one of the two forts on Western Heights, and is linked to the other, the Citadel, by a series of dry moats (the lines). It is, arguably, the most impressive and immediately noticeable feature on Dover's Western Heights.

The artillery at the Redoubt faced mostly inland - it was intended to attack an invading force attempting to capture Dover from the rear.

The construction of the Redoubt was in two periods - the first being from 1804-1808 during the Napoleonic Wars, and the second from 1859-1864 following the recommendations of the 1859 Royal Commission.

:: North Entrance

Part of the Western Heights defences which also comprise The Citadel and Drop Redoubt , St Martin's Battery and Citadel Batteries as well as the Grand Shaft Stairs. The North Centre Bastion dating from 1804 to 1810 is very overgrown but still extremely impressive in its size.

North Entrance ..

The North Entrance was built in the 1860's. It is in poor condition, the bridge having almost collapsed, and is very overgrown. Both sites are fenced off and can only be viewed from the outside.

:: South Entrance

Access to the Redoubt was via a bridge, the evidence of which is still very clear. Once through this entrance, the officers quarters are on the right, and a guard room and cells on the left. The bombproof barracks are on the other side of the structure, and could have housed 90 men. Married soldiers also had quarters here, and they were situated opposite the bombproof barracks.

South Entrance ..

There are 4 caponiers in the Redoubt, each with a gun room. There are also 3 gun rooms overlooking the East Ditch, and two more gun rooms to provide gunfire over the Line leading to the Citadel. The main magazine is situated by the married quarters, with further magazines attached to each caponier and the gun rooms defending the ditches.
